1. Stay at the Leland Lodge
The Leland Lodge is by far the most charming place I’ve ever stayed, up north or otherwise. From the traditional motel-style room key to the Murphy beds in the room to accommodate kids in a very fun way each detail is better than the next.
Tip: Don’t miss the Brussels sprouts at Bogey’s 19th hole.
2. Eat at The Cove
At the heart of historic Fishtown is The Cove, serving the most delicious whitefish this side of Lake Michigan. Right on the waterfront and with enough room for the kids to run around, this spot is a can’t miss.
Tip: Order the famous Chubby Mary and don’t forget to tag me in your Instagram post.
3. Go Shopping at Leland gal
Maggie, or the Leland Gal as she’s known, designs the most charming clothes, accessories, housewares, and more. Ask your husband to take the kids for a walk so you don’t feel rushed when shopping!
Tip: I’m particularly fond of her jewelry which oozes with fun and flair.
4. Find a Sweet Water Floral Workshop
How have I lived nearly 36 years without Kalin Sheick in my life? A talented wedding flower designer by day, Kalin and her Sweet Water Floral team also regularly hold floral design workshops around Leland. You can check here and here to see if there’s a workshop during your visit!

5. Recharge with a Blue Boat Coffee
Just a few blocks away from the Leland Lodge is Blue Boat coffee, Leland’s best coffee shop. It’s tiny on the inside but full of heart and sweet treats.
Tip: Order a cafe miel, lovingly made with Michigan honey.
6. Walk Around Fishtown
Once the home of a small fishing village, Fishtown is now home to delightful gift and clothing boutiques, art galleries and specialty food shops.
Tip: Keep an eye out for the salmon that try to jump the Leland damn.
7. Sip Some Local Beers at Mitten Brewing Co.
Just a short drive from Leland in Northport is Mitten Brewing Co. With 14 local beers on tap plus wine and cider there’s something for everyone {including unlimited popcorn for the kids}.
Tip: Order the the Big Show, a 12-inch oven baked hot pretzel that’s equal parts delicious and impressive.
8. Make Some New Friends at Idyll Farms
If you’ve never been to a goat farm {and honestly, who has?} please include Idyll Farms on your itinerary. Not to be upstaged by the adorable baby goats, the farmstead goat cheese is the most delicious I’ve ever had.
Tip: If you’re in the Midwest you might be able to find Idyll Farms goat cheese at a local market near you.
9. Grab a Sandwich from the Village Cheese Shanty
Hands down the cutest sandwich shop I’ve ever been to. Despite it’s tiny size you should plan to spend some time carefully picking out the perfect sandwich and sides to take with you {carryout only} for the day.
Tip: Whatever sandwich you get make sure it’s on their famous pretzel bread.
10. Hike Pyramid Point Trail
Is that the Caribbean, you might be asking yourself? Nope, just pure Michigan. With the most stunning lookout point high over lake Michigan, Pyramid Point is a relaxed hiking spot, perfect for adventurers of all ages.
Tip: If you’re visiting in the spring keep an eye out for ramps {aka wild leeks} along the trail.
