Hi friends, happy Thursday. The title of today’s post says it all, I’ve been thinking about trying a capsule wardrobe. The key words here are thinking and trying. I’m scared because I have the accountability of the internet to keep me in check and that’s a lot of pressure. What if I hate it? What if I fail? Yes, we’re still just talking about clothes here but still. I really, really like clothes!
Let’s start with this, what is a capsule wardrobe? If you’ve never heard of the concept, a capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of clothes from your closet that you wear in various combinations throughout a specific time frame or season. So for example, I might select 35 pieces {tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes} that I wear in September. That’s it. I imagine mixing accessories in is encouraged but for the most part you’re just working with those pieces. The idea is that having less options actually creates more variety in one’s wardrobe and also sparks greater joy since the pieces you select are the ones that you truly love {and probably wear most often anyway}. Sounds pretty easy, right?
Except I love clothes. And shoes. And jackets. And all of the things. So how do I make a capsule wardrobe work for me? Luckily, I’ve been thinking about this and have a few thoughts to share.
- Some people curate a capsule wardrobe for a season but to be safe I’d like to try it for one month only.
- I really don’t want my capsule wardrobe to be boring. The dress I’m wearing in these photos for example, is so pretty and vibrant. Could I make it work as part of a capsule wardrobe? Maybe we’ll find out!
- I’m definitely in to the idea of a capsule wardrobe saving money and time shopping. My money and my time are precious and I suspect I could be using both of them in more productive ways.
- What if I get bored, or frustrated, or burnt out? Well it is only a month so I can probably figure it out.
- When should I start? Early September still seems summery. Perhaps the day after Labor Day to officially say goodbye to summer and hello to fall?
- How will content on the blog change? Typically I share several new outfits each week. Would you like to see all of the outfits I could put together within the capsule?
- The capsule wardrobe concept is a few years old now, how can I make it feel fresh and easy?
- Do I really only get to wear a few pairs of shoes? Yikes.
Have you thought about starting a capsule wardrobe? I’d love to hear!

I have heard of capsule wardrobe before, but never actually knew what it was. This is a very interesting concept and I am excited to see how you will pull it off since you love clothes so much! I also loves clothes so much but seem to wear 20% of everything I own so maybe I can get some ideas from your experiment!
Thanks, Erin! I hope I can help, it’s actually a fun process and I know you could totally do it!
