boy or girl? 15 old wives’ tales

One of the fun things about not finding out the gender of your baby before it’s born is that people are usually shocked and excited when they hear that you don’t know what you’re having. It seems rare these days that people wait it out but speaking from experience it is truly one of the best surprises you will ever have. The other fun thing about not finding out is that people LOVE to guess what you’re having. Not just grandmothers-to-be either, really everyone and anyone has an opinion! Since I too am getting eager to know who this squirmy babe in my belly is I thought it would be fun to see what the old wives’ might say – boy or girl? Let’s find out, shall we!

  1. Sweet versus salty: It’s said that if you find yourself craving all things sweet, that’s a sign you’re having a girl. Cravings for salty or even protein-rich foods mean it might be a boy. Result: It’s a girl
  2. Morning sickness: Unfortunately, this early pregnancy symptom doesn’t tend to discriminate. But if you’re suffering from excessive nausea and morning sickness, it’s said you could be having a girl. Result: It’s a girl
  3. Pregnancy glow, or no? If your complexion is bright and your hair resembles that of a Pantene commercial, you could be having a boy. If that much-talked-about “pregnancy glow” is MIA and you’re breaking out, it may just mean you’ve got a girl growing. (It’s said little girls steal Mom’s good looks.) Result: It’s a girl
  4. Partner’s weight gain: As this old wives’ tale goes, if your partner is gaining weight alongside you (also known as “sympathy weight”), that could be a sign that you’re carrying a girl. (Who wants to go to the gym when there’s nesting to be done?) Result: It’s a boy
  5. Moody versus mellow: If you’re feeling more moody than mellow, you might be having a girl. If you’re more chilled out, legend has it you should get ready for a boy. Result: It’s a boy
  6. Carrying high versus low: According to pregnancy lore, carrying high means you’re having a girl, while carrying low means it’s a boy. Result: It’s a boy
  7. Heart rate: During your next ultrasound, pay attention to baby’s heart rate. If that little ticker is beating faster than 140 beats per minute, get ready for a girl. Result: It’s a boy
  8. Chinese gender chart: Place one finger on the age you were when you conceived and another finger on the month of conception. Where your fingers meet in the middle will tell you if you’re expecting a little boy or girl. Result: It’s a boy
  9. The Linea Nigra: Some moms develop a dark line down the center of the belly. If the line continues above your belly button, you’re having a boy. If it finishes below your belly button, you have a girl bun in your oven. Result: It’s a girl
  10. Body hair: If your body hair is growing thick and fast, you’re said to be having a boy. If your hair growth has remained normal, there might be a girl nestled in your womb. Result: It’s a girl
  11. Weight gain placement: Carrying all of your extra weight out front, it’s a boy. If those pregnancy pounds are piling on all over, you might be expecting a daughter. Result: It’s a girl
  12. Cold feet: If you are suffering from a bad case of the cold feet, you might be expecting a boy. If your feet are as warm as ever, you might be carrying a girl. Result: It’s a girl
  13. Foot size: You are not crazy if you feel as though your feet are growing. A baby boy is said to add a half size and a girl keeps your feet in your current shoes. Result: It’s a girl
  14. Headaches: Extreme headaches while pregnant are said to mean you are carrying a baby boy. No real headaches? Girl. Result: It’s a girl
  15. Sleeping: Naturally falling asleep on the left side means you are carrying a boy, the right side is a girl. Result: It’s a girl

Here’s the tally:

5 boy

10 girl

We’ll find out in about 8 weeks – I promise to update this post with the real verdict once we know!
