A couple weeks ago I could tell that I was on the last few days of my mascara and headed to Amazon to purchase a fresh one. I haven’t been loyal to one brand or type of mascara in years, so my plan was to just purchase the first one that came up in my search results.
When I searched mascara the top 5 that came up were all around $5 so I thought it would be fun to buy them all to try and review! Each of them had a 5-star rating and combined they all shipped free. Needless to say I was pretty excited about this little experiment! My reviews are in and at the end of this post I’ll tell you which one made the cut and is currently in my makeup bag.
- Covergirl Lashblast Mascara, very black – I’ve actually used this mascara on and off for years. It goes on very light but separates better than any other mascara I’ve tried. If you’re looking for a light, everyday mascara for daytime I’d try this one.
- Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Mascara, blackest black – this has a curved brush and goes on pretty clumpy. It required a lot of strokes to brush out the clumps and ultimately separated and fanned my lashes like it claimed but I don’t think I’d buy this one again.
- Maybelline New York The Falsies Volum’ Express Washable Mascara, blackest black – this brush is also curved and it’s softer, so I didn’t get as much definition and separation as with some of the others. Additionally it does go on a little clumpy and is a little more difficult to spread out. My lashes did look the longest with this one so if you’re going for length, I’d give this one a shot.
- L’oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara, carbon black – this one has the most traditional brush, which I like. My lashes looked instantly thicker but not clumpy and the color was really dark. This would be my pick for evening eye makeup, if you like to have a more dramatic option for date nights or special occasions.
- Maybelline New York The Colossal Volum’ Express Washable Mascara, glam black – this one has a shorter wand which i liked – it helped me really get in there {if you know what I mean}. It goes on a bit lighter which was great for applying a few coats. Additionally, the mascara itself feels hydrating and has a bit of a slick look. This was absolutely my favorite and is in my makeup bag today!
Do you have a favorite mascara? I’d love to hear!

I almost died when I read this post! I’ve been using the colossal for YEARS!! I have really long eyelashes so it took me a while to find the one, and of all the mascara’s I’ve tried since starting to wear make-up at 14 this is my all time favorite! It does wonders and makes my eyelashes look like a million dollars. For anyone else reading this blog, Liz is 1000% on point with this post!
