Make Your Space Stretch: Design Tips & Tricks from California Closets & Marie Kondo

Thank you California Closets for sponsoring this post.

If there’s one thing I’ve been doing throughout our house over the last few months it’s organizing! Between spring cleaning and nesting, the bump and I can barely keep up over here going from space to space.

I thought I had a pretty good handle on maximizing our rather large for a mid-century home closets but when I heard that California Closets had recently started working with Marie Kondo {organizational guru and author of the super popular book The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up} I was intrigued to find out what they could do in our space.

Last Saturday, Elizabeth from our Birmingham, MI California Closets came to our house so we could walk through a few of the spaces that I’m struggling to complete: our pantry, linen closet, master bedroom closet, and kids room closets {side note, can you believe in a few weeks I will have kids?!}. Overall I try to keep things fairly tidy {and by tidy I mean throw everything into a basket and call it a day} but our closets don’t feel as functional as they could and that’s where Elizabeth offered some great ideas. Here are just a couple tips that really resognated with me:

  • Add drawers! I tend to add baskets to any space I’m looking to organize but they’re not always the most functional solution. Elizabeth suggested adding built in drawers to every area we looked at which would really help to maximize storage space and reduce clutter.
  • Add levels! In all of our clothing closets, Elizabeth recommended adding additional bars at varying levels to hang as many clothes as possible. Especially in the kids rooms, having lower bars would mean putting things at their level {and if you have an independent toddler you know this is very important}.
  • Build it in!  California Closets offers built in storage solutions for things every closet needs like hampers, ties, and belts. I absolutely love the sound of a built in hamper!

Walking through our home it quickly became obvious that the California Closets professional design consultants like Elizabeth will collaborate with you to create a custom design that meets your needs, reflect your personal style, and work within your budget {so husbands are happy}.

I was also surprised to learn that California Closets offers custom organizational solutions for your entire home – not just closets! From pantries and media centers, to mudrooms and garages, California Closets  enhances the storage potential and purpose of even small spaces to maximize the function of your home.

I’m so excited to meet with Elizabeth and review her designs and recommendations for our closets. Hopefully we can check a few more items off of our ‘must do before baby two arrives’ list soon!
